AWTY OPENS NEW ATHLETIC STADIUM

The Awty International School opened its new Athletics Stadium on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 with a grand celebration for its students, faculty, staff, and board members.

The celebration included a special appearance by Houston Dynamo player and Awty alumnus, Stuart Holden as well as a moment of silence in honor of the late J. Fred Duckett, former Awty teacher and coach.

The new facility includes a 1,400-seat stadium, press box, soccer field, eight-lane track and field event facilities, four tennis courts, concession stand, locker rooms, maintenance facility, storage facility, and parking.

“This is a magnificent step forward for Awty. The whole school community is delighted that our children will be able to have the benefit of a truly first-class athletic facility, which we can finally call our own,” stated Dr. David Watson, Head of School.

In the past, Awty’s soccer teams have played and practiced on a smaller field on Awty’s campus while the track teams have competed at stadiums of schools in the TAPPS district.  The tennis teams have practiced at Memorial Park Tennis Center and have played their home games at courts of schools in the TAPPS district.

“We are excited about this new development,” added Karen Waugh, Athletic Director. “The addition of this state-of-the-art athletic facility will enable our teams to practice and host home games on Awty’s campus.”

Awty will host its first track meet, TAPPS Regional Track Meet, this Friday, April 25.
