Holiday_Cards In just a few weeks time the joys of the Christmas break will be upon us again. The first “half” of the school year sees much important work achieved and accomplished in our school. I am glad to say that our students at Awty have very much deserved their holiday and have worked very hard during this extended period since... US_Notes The Fall Athletic season recently ended on a high note for both girls and boys sports. The girls’ cross country team captured the TAPPS Division 5A State Championships with Sophie Peeters, Laura Pacifico, Catherine Baumgartner, and Charlotte Peeters finishing in the top 10 earning individual All-State Recognition. Christina Pacifico... Thanksgiving Ah! Fall has finally arrived, leaves are gently falling and cooler weather has brought out our sweaters! Our students have been diligent in their preparations for the seasonal celebrations. Mrs. Mongrain’s ESL classes were busy learning about her favorite holiday – Thanksgiving! The 4th and 5th graders were challenged: they needed to find out why Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in... Overview The Third Annual Sarofim Mind Challenge has concluded! Students from 6th to 12th grade were presented a contest comprised of ten extremely difficult questions on a variety of topics. Congratulations to Michel Djandji (12th grade), who took first place, winning his third straight Mind Challenge with a score of 74/100. Second place went to Marjorie Hirs (9th grade), who scored 73/100... Overview “Homecoming Week” had a new twist this year with many students donning “face tattoos”, “spirit scarves” and “Awty Rams” yellow and green plaid boxers and pants. The show of Awty Spirit and Awty pride continued on both November 15 and December 13 when students, as well as faculty and staff, sported the new “Spirit Day” T-shirts to show their support... 2008_Gala The Awty International School hit the runway with its “Guys in Ties…Girls in Pearls,” a haute-couture fashion show and luncheon, on October 29, 2007. More than $12,000 was raised at the event with proceeds benefiting the school’s annual fund. Ronald Jackson, Acting Director of Advancement, and David Watson, Head of School opened the event at the Junior League of Houston... Isn’t it wonderful, living in Houston? It’s November 16, and the weather is beautiful. Many of our neighbors on the East coast and our friends and families in Europe envy us this time of year. Paris covered in frost, London in the fog, Berlin awaiting the onslaught of General Winter… and here we are, feeling as though Spring had come... MS_Notes Each year, seventh graders participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIPS) and it is a pleasure to report that a full thirty-four percent of the students in the current seventh grade qualified for the program. To be qualified these students scored at 95% or better in one of the major categories of the CTP IV tests that we administer... Opportunities Is it not logical to want to assuage the sufferings of individuals worldwide? I often wonder what motivates the pain inflicted on unknown others. Not a day goes by in which I do not hear of human rights violations, civil wars, bombings, or demeaning stereotypes. As Albert Camus writes in his novel The Plague, it is ignorance that causes actions of hate and clouds our perceptions of others. Although ignorance... Overview Happy Holidays! December is a busy month for the APPA as we plan all of our annual events that are popular with everyone during this holiday season. This month the APPA has a visit from Santa Claus and the local firemen. They will visit the Pre-School on Tuesday, December 18 and pick up all of the collected toys that have been donated by the school to give to local charities. The very next day is... Overview The 2007 Golf Classic, a special event sponsored by the Awty Dads Club, was a hole-in-one success again this year. This annual tournament was held at a new venue this year, Wildcat Golf Club, on November 8, 2007 and was generously sponsored by leading businesses here in Houston as well as several members of the Awty community. The Awty International... Patrick Strassmann, 12th grade, won the non-native first prize in the 6th Greater Houston Chinese Speech Contest! This was the first time Awty sent students to the Chinese speech contest, and we have achieved the best! Congrats Patrick! Congratulations also to Arturo Mateos and Maria Fornari, who are both in the 11th grade, participated in the Kingwood Art Show and Competition. Arturo won 1st,... Awty Notes This December 2007 issue of the eCommunique will be the last issue created. Beginning January 2008, The Awty International School will streamline its electronic communication to parents, combining the Middle School / Upper School / APPA Notes and adding a section for Primary School. This combined electronic communication will replace the monthly eCommunique and will be sent to parents via email on a weekly basis. It will also be posted to the website. The school's communication goal is to keep parents well informed, but to do so in an effective, efficient manner which makes it easy for parents to get and make use of the information that is important to them. Awty Notes will be sent and posted every Friday, beginning January 11, 2008. Notes from each division (Primary, Middle, and Upper) as well as notes from all other areas including the parent volunteer groups (APPA, Booster Club, Dads’ Club) will be due to the Associate Director of Communications by 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. Any updates received after 10 a.m. on Thursday will be posted the following week...
