Holiday_Cards As Fall begins and cooler temperatures arrive, all schools find themselves imperceptibly changing their focus from settling back into a routine, to getting down to work, to preparing for the events and occasions, which form part of the life of the institution on a year-round basis. Our community here at Awty has been hard at work on many different fronts... US_Notes The first major social event of the year, Homecoming, unfolded without a hitch. The students selected Sophie Peeters as the Homecoming Queen and Phil Queller as the School’s first Homecoming King. The Rams soccer team easily continued their Homecoming undefeated string which dates back to 1983 when Awty still played American football (we switched to soccer in 1987). Now the Fourth Grade have finished building their houses for their imaginary Bruff Community. Overview Pirates invaded the Sarofim Library as Middle School and Upper School students celebrated international Talk Like A Pirate Day (September 19). Students were treated to lessons on how to talk this ancient language and explored a cache of pirate books. Patrons checking out a library book were allowed to plunder the library’s treasure chest... Overview New_Stadium The Awty Rams had a beautiful fall day for their defeat over Trinity Academy from San Antonio at the Homecoming soccer game on Saturday, October 13, 2007. The Rams won 7-0. At halftime, the Awty Cheerleaders performed and the 2007 Homecoming Court was announced. Sophie Peeters was crowned Homecoming Queen and for the first time in Awty history, a Homecoming... Fall_Fun The holiday season is upon us and with it comes our annual Holiday Market. I hope you will be able to join us on Monday, December 3, 2007 in the Globe, located upstairs in the Lower School. The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with over 20 vendors; 16 of them new to our market. This year's market will have the feel of a European farmer's market as we feature vendors with artisan breads, cheeses and natural bath products... This time of the year is always very calm so I take this occasion to write about the Mission Laïque Française. This is my recurring theme. It’s the topic that pops up each year about this time... MS_Notes Perhaps the greatest source of anticipation in the hearts and minds of the Middle School is the upcoming dance. It may be that recent Progress Reports, foretelling the academic successes and concerns coming at the end of the first term, should command their attention, and I am confident that academic pursuits are very close to the top of their priority list, but the dance... Opportunities Every summer I go to England to visit my family. I always look forward to seeing them and enjoying the European lifestyle, quaint little towns, small cars driving on the wrong side of the road, the British humor; it’s all good fun! Online Volunteer Training Now Available If you were not able to attend one of the live-session volunteer trainings, you can now sign-up for the online volunteer training. The online training will allow you to take the course from the convenience of your own home or from one of the dedicated computers on campus. Those who complete the training online can address questions and/or issues with one of the Awty counselors. Internet IDs and passwords will be given by Faye Bouazzouz in the Advancement Department. The advantage of the Internet training—beyond its convenience—is that you will be able to take your time, stop and resume the training, or redo a particular passage. Starting January 1, 2008, all volunteers will need to be registered with the Advancement department. This includes completing the volunteer form, keeping and reading the Abuse Prevention Manual, and completing the required volunteer training. Annual Phone-a-thon a Success Awty held its annual Phone-a-thon on October 23-24, 2007, bringing in over $35,000 for the school’s annual fund.
