Lower School Environmental Club

The Lower School Environmental Club will begin again in February. Attendance will be open to all Awty Lower School students in grades 1 – 5. Meetings will be held on Saturday mornings in Mrs. Susan Permenter’s room in the Lower School building (Rm. 111). Due to logistics and space, attendance at each meeting will be limited to 35 students with an RSVP requested.

Meetings will begin at 10:00 a.m. and adjourn at 12:30 p.m. The content of each meeting will include an opening dialoged to introduce each member, and to discuss any environmental issues members are concerned about. Following the opening introduction and discussion, club members will view a video on a habitat. After the video, members will discuss the film and the relevance of this habitat to the environment. After the discussion, members will participate in making one or more crafts related to the habitat studied for that meeting. A new habitat will be introduced and discussed each month.

In our first session we will also learn about Nature Journals and Conservation Journals – what they are, and how to begin journals of our own. We will make our first Nature Journal entry at our first meeting. Each meeting will close with a discussion of conservation and a list of conservation ideas each child may choose from to implement in his/her home over the upcoming month. Our first Conservation Journal entries will then be made at home about the conservation experiment each member chooses to do. We will share our experiments and Conservation Journal entries with each other at our next meeting.

Mrs. Permenter is requesting donations of cleaned egg cartons; toilet and paper towel roll inserts; 9” and 4” white recycled paper plates (no coatings); 8 and 12 oz white recycled paper cups (no coatings); multi colored pipe-cleaners and craft sticks to use for craft projects. Additional craft supply wish list requests will be provided at each meeting for upcoming activities. Please drop off any donations throughout the coming weeks with Mrs. Permenter in Rm. 111.

Mrs. Permenter is also looking for parent volunteers from each section who would like to attend the meetings and assist with crafts, snacks, and ambiance enhancement!

Please RSVP to Mrs. Permenter at spermenter@awty.org if your child is interested in attending the meeting on February 23, or if you would like to volunteer as a parent helper.
