Class of 2010 IB Results
Awty students maintained excellence on the International Baccalaureate (IB) final exams taken this past spring.
Fifty-nine out of 65 students passed the rigorous, externally assessed IB exams. Since it began requiring the program in 1996, Awty has seen the number of students passing the intensive exams steadily increase. Individual exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 7 and scores of 5 or above earn students placement in first-tier universities, as well as allow the students to receive college credit or advanced placement at many institutions.
International Baccalaureate diploma candidates take exams in six subjects. Standard level exams are usually three hours and higher level exams are four or five hours. In Visual Arts, the students do not have a written exam; however, they do have an exhibit of their work and create supportive documentation as they also do in Theatre Arts. In the two-year course of study, students write over 14,000 words. At every stage in the two-year program, students incrementally prepare for the external examinations through course work, exams both written and oral, presentations, and internal assessment work. There are at least three and sometimes as many as five I.B. external examiners in every subject and at every level. The results are as objectively reached as any evaluation process can possibly be.
This year, Awty students earned an average of 33 out of 45 possible cumulative exam points. The highest possible score on the IB Diploma is 45 points, a score attained by less than 1% of all candidates annually. The minimum pass score for the Diploma is 24 points. The highest score attained by an individual Awty student this year was 44 points. In addition, 19 of the 65 IB Diplomas awarded to Awty students were Bilingual Diplomas. These students studied their foreign language at the same level as their language of instruction.
The International Baccalaureate Organization's (IBO) diploma program is a demanding college-prep course of study recognized world-wide. The grading system is criterion-referenced in that each student's performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement consistent from one examination level to the next. All upper-classmen follow the IBO's diploma program and are well prepared for university work; consequently they are accepted by universities all over the world.
This fall, Awty students will be attending top universities such as Cornell University, Dartmouth University, Rice University, Yale University, McGill University, University of British Columbia, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and many others. You can see a complete list HERE.
