Head of School Search

Welcome to The Awty International School’s Head of School search page.

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, after much consideration of her achievements during her tenure, Dr. Heather Beck, announced that the 2025/26 school year will be her final as Head of School at The Awty International School. Read Dr. Beck’s announcement here.

Our Board of Trustees has charged a Search Committee to lead a thoughtful, thorough, and deliberate process to find, assess, and ultimately recommend the best possible candidate to the Board for a Head of School to lead Awty into its next chapter. Read the Search Committee

On Friday, March 6, 2026 we were pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Tom Oden as Interim Head of School for the 2026–2027 academic year. Tom, who has served as our Head of Secondary since 2018, will officially begin his interim leadership role on June 13, 2026, providing vital continuity and stability as we transition. While we benefit from Tom’s extensive international experience and deep commitment to the Awty mission, the Board continues its diligent work in the search for a permanent Head of School. UPDATES

Dear Awty Community,

I am writing to share an update on The Awty International School Head of School search, led by the Board of Trustees Search Committee.

This past July, Awty’s Search Committee and our lead search consultant, Lucy Hayes, narrowed down a pool of 74 applicants to a long list of 13 candidates. Lucy interviewed each of these candidates to better understand how they would fit with our community.

Based on the interviews and reviews of each individual’s experience, the Search Committee evaluated each long list candidate against the criteria Lucy crafted specifically for our community's needs.

The Search Committee selected a shortlist of 6 highly qualified candidates, all of whom currently serve as school leaders at high-performing institutions.

We are genuinely excited about the caliber of this shortlist, and look forward to getting to know them better in the next stages of the search process.

Here are our next steps:

  1. Informal, in-person meetings with shortlisted candidates have already begun.
  2. The Search Committee begins online interviews with shortlisted candidates soon.
  3. The Search Committee selects 2-4 finalist candidates.
  4. The Search Committee interviews finalist candidates in person.

We anticipate The Awty International School Head of School selection and announcement will be made by the end of this calendar year.

The values of the Awty community guide every step of this search process. We remain deeply committed to keeping you engaged and updated as we take the next steps. For more information, visit our search page at awty.org/about/head-of-school-search.

We welcome your questions and feedback at awty@perrettlaver.com.

Warm Regards,

Dear Awty Community,

I am pleased to provide an update on our Head of School search. Over the summer, the Search committee has continued to work diligently to identify an exceptional leader to guide us into Awty’s next chapter.

In addition to our advertised posting, our search consultant, Perrett Laver, has conducted extensive outreach, contacting over 600 individuals across more than 50 countries and 45 U.S. states. This effort has generated a deep, diverse, and highly qualified pool of over 70 applicants.

Following a thorough review of the applications, the Search Committee selected more than a dozen candidates for the longlist stage. The quality of this candidate pool is a testament to the outstanding reputation of Awty and the opportunity that many candidates see in this position at this time in Awty’s trajectory.

Our lead consultant, Lucy Hayes, will be conducting interviews throughout July and August. As she moves forward with interviewing longlist applicants, the Perrett Laver team remains anchored to the priorities established in the Awty Head of School position statement. This foundational document was drafted using valuable insights from our community survey and search meetings with Awty stakeholders.

We will continue to keep the community updated about progress this fall.

We continue to welcome your thoughts and questions via our email awty@perrettlaver.com.

With best wishes,

Peggy Krendl

Dear Awty Community,

I am writing to share an update on our progress with the search for our new Head of School.

We launched our position profile and our advertised posting on April 14th. Since then, Lucy Hayes, our lead consultant, and the Perrett Laver team have been reaching out broadly to leading educators in the international schools sector, independent schools globally, and in the US. Over 400 contacts have been made to date. Lucy is leveraging Perrett Laver's global network to surface, qualify, and triangulate candidates to ensure they strongly align with the criteria key for Awty's next leader.

Feedback on Awty has been very positive, and it is clear that the school is held in high regard both within the US and around the world. There are many interesting and positive conversations ongoing, and we are excited to see how this develops as we get deeper into the search.

We remain on track with our timeline and will continue to update the Awty community as we progress. Your engagement and support are an important part of this process, and we are grateful for the thoughtful input many of you have already provided.

We continue to welcome your thoughts on the search, and if you would like to make a nomination, please e-mail awty@perrettlaver.com.  For more information about the search, we invited you to visit awty.org/about/head-of-school-search.

Dear Awty Community,

We hope you and your families enjoyed a restful and restorative winter break. As we welcome everyone back to campus and begin the new term together, we would like to share an update regarding the leadership of The Awty International School and outline the next steps in our planning for the year ahead.

Following the announcement that Dr. Heather Beck will not be returning for the 2026–27 school year, the Board of Trustees has begun a thoughtful process to prepare for Awty’s next chapter of leadership. Our work begins with the formation of a Head of School Search Committee to guide this important effort.

The Head of School Search Committee comprises members of the Board of Trustees and Parent Association, bringing both governance oversight and parent perspective to this work. The committee members are:

  • Peggy Krendl, Committee Chair
  • Maconda Abinader, Board Chair
  • Mary Jo Pokorski, President, Awty Parent and Personnel Association
  • Justin Levine, Trustee
  • Hesam Panahi, Trustee
  • Johanne Gatto, Trustee

The committee will oversee both the selection of an Interim Head of School to lead Awty during the 2026-27 school year, as well as a longer-term, intensive and collaborative process to identify a permanent Head of School for the 2027-28 year and beyond. Both processes will seek to identify a leader who aligns with Awty’s mission, values, community, and the needs of our students and families.

In the weeks ahead, we will share more information about the search process, including how we will engage the broader community for input regarding the search. Your perspectives are valued, and we look forward to hearing from you as we move forward together.

We are grateful to the members of the Search Committee for their time, care, and dedication to this important responsibility. Thank you as well to our parent community for your continued trust, engagement, and partnership in supporting Awty and its students.

With warm regards,

Maconda Abinader
Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Awty Community,

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge—and preparing the way for what comes next.” (Simon Sinek) These words come to mind as I share that I will be transitioning from my role at Awty following this school year.

As I take this next step, I do so with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve this remarkable community and with deep appreciation for all we have accomplished together.

As I reflect on my time here, I am filled with immense respect for our extraordinary faculty and staff. Their dedication, talent, and tireless commitment have shaped so many of the accomplishments we now celebrate—and many more that continue to unfold. It has been a privilege to work alongside such remarkable educators and professionals who pour their hearts into your children and this community every day.

I am equally grateful for the families, students, alumni, Trustees, and supporters who make Awty so vibrant and inspiring. Your partnership, your trust, and your belief in our mission have strengthened our collective work and created a sense of belonging that is truly unmatched.

While I do not yet know what my next adventure will be, I know with certainty that it will be in service to others. Nothing brings me greater joy than helping people, lifting them up, and making their lives brighter.

In the meantime, as we look ahead to the spring, I will do all I can to support a smooth transition, setting the stage for the next, bright chapter of our exceptional school.

Dr. Heather Beck
