Head of School Search

Welcome to The Awty International School’s Head of School search page.

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, after much consideration of her achievements during her tenure, Dr. Heather Beck, announced that the 2025/26 school year will be her final as Head of School at The Awty International School. Read Dr. Beck’s announcement here.

Our Board of Trustees has charged a Search Committee to lead a thoughtful, thorough, and deliberate process to find, assess, and ultimately recommend the best possible candidate to the Board for a Head of School to lead Awty into its next chapter. Read the Search Committee announcement here.

Know someone who would be a great fit? We welcome your nominations.

UPDATES

Dear Awty Community,

We hope you and your families enjoyed a restful and restorative winter break. As we welcome everyone back to campus and begin the new term together, we would like to share an update regarding the leadership of The Awty International School and outline the next steps in our planning for the year ahead.

Following the announcement that Dr. Heather Beck will not be returning for the 2026–27 school year, the Board of Trustees has begun a thoughtful process to prepare for Awty’s next chapter of leadership. Our work begins with the formation of a Head of School Search Committee to guide this important effort.

The Head of School Search Committee comprises members of the Board of Trustees and Parent Association, bringing both governance oversight and parent perspective to this work. The committee members are:

  • Peggy Krendl, Committee Chair
  • Maconda Abinader, Board Chair
  • Mary Jo Pokorski, President, Awty Parent and Personnel Association
  • Justin Levine, Trustee
  • Hesam Panahi, Trustee
  • Johanne Gatto, Trustee

The committee will oversee both the selection of an Interim Head of School to lead Awty during the 2026-27 school year, as well as a longer-term, intensive and collaborative process to identify a permanent Head of School for the 2027-28 year and beyond. Both processes will seek to identify a leader who aligns with Awty’s mission, values, community, and the needs of our students and families.

In the weeks ahead, we will share more information about the search process, including how we will engage the broader community for input regarding the search. Your perspectives are valued, and we look forward to hearing from you as we move forward together.

We are grateful to the members of the Search Committee for their time, care, and dedication to this important responsibility. Thank you as well to our parent community for your continued trust, engagement, and partnership in supporting Awty and its students.

With warm regards,

Maconda Abinader
Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Awty Community,

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge—and preparing the way for what comes next.” (Simon Sinek) These words come to mind as I share that I will be transitioning from my role at Awty following this school year.

As I take this next step, I do so with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve this remarkable community and with deep appreciation for all we have accomplished together.

As I reflect on my time here, I am filled with immense respect for our extraordinary faculty and staff. Their dedication, talent, and tireless commitment have shaped so many of the accomplishments we now celebrate—and many more that continue to unfold. It has been a privilege to work alongside such remarkable educators and professionals who pour their hearts into your children and this community every day.

I am equally grateful for the families, students, alumni, Trustees, and supporters who make Awty so vibrant and inspiring. Your partnership, your trust, and your belief in our mission have strengthened our collective work and created a sense of belonging that is truly unmatched.

While I do not yet know what my next adventure will be, I know with certainty that it will be in service to others. Nothing brings me greater joy than helping people, lifting them up, and making their lives brighter.

In the meantime, as we look ahead to the spring, I will do all I can to support a smooth transition, setting the stage for the next, bright chapter of our exceptional school.
