Application Requirements

Grade Equivalencies

The Lower School includes children ages seven through 11 and corresponds to the following grade level designations:

American system french system british system
Ages 7-8 2nd Grade CE1 Year 3
Ages 8-9 3rd Grade CE2 Year 4
Ages 9-10 4th Grade CM1 Year 5

Dual Language Immersion

In 2nd and 3rd grade, the curriculum is delivered through a 60/40 dual language immersion model with the core subjects delivered in either English, French, or Spanish (60% of the instructional time), and the specialty classes, accounting for 40% of the instructional time, (i.e. Art, Physical Education, Technology, Second Language) taught in the immersion language.

In 4th through 5th grade, all students study a second language for five or six periods each week.

Please indicate your language preference on the application form.

Openings in the Lower School grades are limited and based on attrition. As an international school, we do expect some amount of mobility in our population, but we are not able to guarantee the number of places that will be available in any given grade.

International Applicants

We understand that applying from outside of the United States can be complicated. While we recommend visiting Awty and Houston during the application process, we will work with you to facilitate your application should you run into any obstacles meeting the application requirements.

There is a $200 non-refundable fee payable online with submission of the application.

Please be prepared to upload a photograph of the applicant.

Step 2: Teacher Recommendation

Please have your child’s current teacher complete the Shared Teacher Recommendation form for Lower School.

In an effort to move away from paper to electronic documents, please request where possible that the teacher complete, scan, and send the confidential form directly to admissions@awty.org.

Step 3: Classroom Visit

We may invite your child for a classroom visit to get a sense of how he or she interacts with peers, adults, and the learning environment. No special preparation is required. We will contact you to make arrangements as needed.

Step 4: Admissions Testing

Applicants to Lower School grades must submit results of standardized admissions testing as outlined below. The testing requirement is waived for students attending a French accredited school and applying to CE1-CM2.

2nd - 4th Grade: WISC
5th Grade: ISEE

For the WISC we recommend Collaborative Academic Testing Service (C.A.T.S.) You may register online by visiting their website at www.catstexas.com.

Overseas and out-of-state-applicants may contract with a private licensed psychologist. Children should be tested in their first language.

For the ISEE, register here. Awty will administer the ISEE on campus on Saturday, January 12. Awty’s testing location code is 447771. Overseas applicants can register at an international location through Prometric.
