Awty offers nine instrumental music classes from 6th grade/6ème through 12th grade/Tle. The band program offers grade-level band classes in 6th/6ème, 7th/5ème, 8th/4ème, 9th/3ème and 10th/2nde. Students in 6th grade/6ème to 8th grade/4ème may join the Middle School Honor band that takes advantage of combining several grades together into a large concert band. Our Upper School musicians in 9th grade/3ème-12th grade/Tle, in addition to their electives, students may participate in our Upper School Jazz Ensemble. Our 9th grade/3ème and 10th grade/2nde drumline classes have become a regular staple of our instrumental music program. Drumline classes perform regularly for school concerts, pep rallies, sports events, and contests. The success of the drumline classes can be attributed to our curriculum that is aimed at teaching fundamentals of beginning percussion to advanced levels of drumline performance.
Our bands have a well-established tradition of being highly competitive. Students in the band classes have won auditions in regional, area, and statewide concert bands and Jazz Band. Students in our program are encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble contests for Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA). Our band students have consistently won top awards at the various solo and ensemble contests we attend. Members of our band and percussion classes take annual trips to the ISAS Fine Arts Festival. The 9th grade band, 10th grade band, Awty Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble consistently compete and earn superior and excellent ratings at our Concert and Sight Reading contests.
Students who enter our band program embark on a journey of learning music through formal instruction of fundamentals of music, performance preparation, and by taking their skills to a multitude of performance stages.
