If you look at the 2021 Awty yearbook, the senior superlative for Georgios Mikos (‘21) is “Most likely to win the Nobel Prize”. That’s the type of accomplishment his classmates predicted for this distinguished Awty alumnus.

Georgios, now pursuing Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, was recently honored with the coveted Terman Engineering Scholastic Award, a distinction reserved for just 30 top seniors from Stanford’s entire undergraduate engineering program. This prestigious recognition comes with a meaningful tradition: recipients invite the secondary school teacher who most profoundly shaped their academic journey to join them at the awards ceremony. Georgios selected Mrs. Lydia Peeran, IB Economics teacher and Ethics Bowl coach.

“Mrs. Peeran played an indelible role in my education by emphasizing excellence and an intimate awareness of the global world,” Georgios reflects. “She showed me how to go beyond regurgitating textbook content, engage critically with current events and economic policy, and express my position succinctly in writing.”

The impact of Mrs. Peeran's teaching extended far beyond the classroom. “Thanks to her rigorous teaching and constant encouragement, I came to Stanford academically prepared with a commitment to address global challenges,” he explains. “She taught me the importance of contextualizing theory in the real world and pushed my analytical skills, leaving an indelible mark on my academic career.”

Georgios’s academic pursuits continue to reflect the analytical rigor and global perspective fostered at Awty. Currently conducting research in lung scarring, he has ambitious plans ahead. “Next year, I plan to complete a coterm in Computer Science at Stanford, continue my research in lung scarring, and apply to MD-PhD programs. I aspire to become a physician-scientist conducting translational research.”

From Awty's classrooms to Stanford's labs, Georgios exemplifies the transformative power of teaching and the enduring bonds between educators and students. And while the Nobel Prize may still be ahead, he's certainly on the path his peers once imagined.
