A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Awty Family and Friends,

It is my pleasure to report once again on the health and success of The Awty International School. 

The 2014-2015 school year began with a bang, with our July 1 purchase of a 5.5 acre tract immediately across North Post Oak Boulevard from Awty School Lane.  This purchase was the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of study by the Board, beginning with the hiring of a commercial real estate broker to research properties within a three-mile radius of the campus.  When this opportunity was presented to us, we were able to provide a definitive commitment, subject to completion of due diligence, in less than five days.  I am proud that our Board was able to move so quickly in what was then a very hot Houston real estate market.

After considering input from many sources, the Board accepted the recommendation of the Head of School and the Building and Grounds Committee, and has targeted completion of an Early Childhood Learning Center (grades PK-3 through first grade) for occupancy beginning Fall 2017, pending successful fundraising for the project.  Once this structure is occupied, it will allow us to complete the rest of the Master Plan for the existing campus, and do so in such a way as to have more green space than we would have had without the new property.

The rest of the Board’s work for the school year was focused on implementation of the Strategic Plan developed in the Spring of 2014.  During the year, Ms. Lisa Darling, Mme. Christine Chourré and many faculty members began implementation of the “One School” concept.  The Preschool is now organized as one program offering two language immersion options: Spanish/English and French/English under Mr. Stanley Way’s leadership.  In the 2015-16 academic year, Ms. Darling will build upon this start, and I am sure she will have more to say on that in her regular news communications.  Suffice it to say, however, we are all excited by the benefits we believe this concept will provide from the standpoint of administrative efficiency, and, much more importantly, to our students, over the longer term.

The second major prong of our Strategic Plan is to raise the funds and complete the construction of our Master Plan.  The addition of new resources in our Advancement Office allowed much groundwork to be done during the past school year, including revision of the Master Plan itself in light of the aforementioned property acquisition. I am confident we will be able to report on the fruits of those efforts when you receive this report next year.

Lastly, in our Strategic Plan the Board has challenged itself to think about the future of international education in the Houston community.  We have been studying demographic trends and developments within the international business community, among other factors, as we try to answer the question of how Awty can meet the expected increased demand for the types of education (French BAC and I.B.) offered at our school.  We didn’t want a future Board or Boards to find themselves suddenly confronted by these questions without forethought.

J'ai le plaisir, une fois encore, de vous informer de la vitalité et de la réussite de l'École internationale Awty.

L'année scolaire 2014-15 a commencé par un « coup » avec, le 1er juillet, notre achat d'un terrain de 2,2 hectares juste de l'autre côté de North Post Oak Boulevard par rapport à Awty School Lane. Cet achat a été l'aboutissement d'une étude de presque une année, faite par le conseil, qui a commencé par l'engagement d'un courtier immobilier pour rechercher des propriétés dans un rayon de cinq kilomètres autour du campus. Lorsque cette occasion s'est présentée, nous avons pu donner un engagement définitif, sous réserve d'une vérification préalable, en moins de cinq jours. Je suis fier que notre conseil ait pu réagir si rapidement dans ce qui était alors un marché immobilier de Houston très tendu.

Après avoir envisagé des contributions de nombreuses sources, le conseil a accepté la recommandation de la directrice de l'École et du Comité bâtiments et terrains, et a ciblé la réalisation d'un centre d'apprentissage pour la petite enfance (de la Petite Section au CP) pour une occupation à compter de l'automne 2017, sous réserve d'une levée de fonds réussie pour le projet. Lorsque cette structure sera occupée, cela nous permettra de terminer le reste du plan directeur du campus actuel, et de le faire de façon à avoir davantage d'espaces verts que nous n'aurions eu sans le nouveau terrain.

Le reste du travail du conseil pour l'année scolaire a été consacré à la mise en œuvre du plan stratégique élaboré au printemps 2014. Pendant l'année, Mme Lisa Darling, Mme  Christine Chourré et de nombreux enseignants ont commencé la mise en place du concept « One School ». L'école maternelle est désormais organisée pour fonctionner comme un seul programme qui offre deux options d'immersion en langues : espagnol/anglais et français/anglais, sous la direction de M. Stanley Way. Durant l'année scolaire 2015-16, Mme Darling s'appuiera sur ce début, et je suis certain qu'elle aura plus à dire à ce sujet dans ses communications régulières. Je dirai seulement, toutefois, que nous sommes tous enthousiasmés par les avantages qu'à notre avis, ce concept fournira du point de vue de l'efficacité administrative et, bien plus encore, à nos élèves sur le plus long terme.

Le second volet important de notre plan stratégique est de lever les fonds et de terminer la construction de notre plan directeur. L'ajout de nouvelles ressources à notre bureau du Développement et des Relations publiques a permis de réaliser beaucoup de travail de terrain durant la dernière année scolaire, notamment la révision du plan directeur lui-même à la lumière de l'acquisition immobilière citée plus haut. Je suis convaincu que nous serons en mesure de vous informer des fruits de ces efforts lorsque vous recevrez ce rapport l'année prochaine.

Enfin, dans notre plan stratégique, le conseil s'est mis lui-même au défi de réfléchir à l'avenir de l'enseignement international dans la communauté de Houston. Nous avons étudié les tendances et les évolutions démographiques au sein de la communauté commerciale internationale, entre autres facteurs, en essayant de répondre à la question : comment Awty peut répondre à l'augmentation prévue de la demande pour les types d'enseignement (baccalauréat français et baccalauréat international) proposés dans notre École. Nous ne voulions pas qu'un ou plusieurs conseils futurs se trouvent soudainement confronté à ces questions sans réflexion préalable.
