FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Wednesday, March 18, 2020
Dear Awty Community,
I write to you on Day 3 of remote learning. We heard wonderful, inspiring, humorous, and touching things about Day 1 and 2. I hope Day 3, 4, and beyond are even better as we all learn how to work together in these new ways.
I am grateful to our teachers for embodying innovation, collaboration, and the creative use of technology. They, in turn, are grateful to you as you work to support them and your children. We are in unprecedented times, but we are charting a meaningful path and we are learning together. Thank you and thanks to your children, too, for their indefatigable spirits.
It is clearer as I write to you today that my original call to return to school on Tuesday, March 24 was overly optimistic. We all thought it was, but one had hoped to not extend our time away from campus unless absolutely needed. It's needed. We have seen increased governmental call for closures of public places; schools around us have extended their anticipated date for returning to on site classes. We are doing the same. Here is our new, anticipated schedule:
All Awty events and activities between now and April 12 are, reluctantly, cancelled. This includes wonderful performances, shows, sports, and major events such as Francophonie and prom. We've been in dialogue with the organizers of the International Festival, who have worked so hard and with such creativity to bring our signature event to fruition this year. With their support, we are also cancelling the International Festival, scheduled for April 16-17. We are sad to have each of these beloved events and traditions cancelled, but we are more mindful of the health and welfare of our community and of our responsibility to the wider city and world, which calls for us to avoid any large gatherings.
As if this weren't enough fun, I need to state the obvious. The situation keeps evolving and changing; we ask for your understanding and support if we have to announce further changes, though none are planned or foreseen at this time.
I'm getting through these days, with the strangeness that they bring, by focusing on gratitude. I'm grateful to be in a community with the talent and resources to continue school and our connections. I'm grateful for the professional development for our teachers, for their talent, and for the infrastructure that your support has built at the School, which makes all of this possible. I'm also grateful for the small things people are sharing – work spaces at home, pets and younger children who enter them and bring us all a smile, victories, and accomplishments.
Thanks for your part in the journey with us.
Be well, Lisa A. H. Darling P.S. Again, all communications and updates regarding COVID-19 can be accessed on the designated web page at any time.
