A Message from the Head of School

Dear Awty Community,

With huge gratitude, we are delighted to share this report on the 2020-2021 academic and fiscal year. While so many of us would love to get the years 2020 or 2021 behind us, given the global struggles of those times, we can look to those years as a time of accomplishment and resilience for our community.

In particular, we are so appreciative of:

  • Our generous donors, who supported the School with special commitment during this time. As happened globally, we all turned to support the institutions most meaningful and important to us. Thank you, Awty Community, for doing that for our School.
  • Our faculty, who taught and nurtured our students, no matter how challenging the times and no matter all they were juggling in their own lives.
  • Our Board, who guided the School with wisdom and grace through a difficult time, always with eyes on the future.
  • Our students, who showed enormous creativity, resilience, and perseverance. Their accomplishments — from ERB, French Bac, and IB results to finding ways to have fun with outdoor movies and an 8th grade field day.
  • Our volunteers, who continued to support the school in countless ways – from running a remote Gala to the APPA finding ways to offer support to our staff, to the Awty Village Moms supporting our Black History Month. We thank you all!

The year holds special memories for us all. At school, we still remark on how special each ‘return’ was: return to campus in July of 2020, return to the athletic fields, and return to in-person graduation. We’ll never forget Chantel Olufsen acting as our live stream auctioneer in the Gala nor Tom Oden leading our students in presentations of their art and ideas in CampFires. Does a favorite memory come to mind for you?

We’re all ready to be done with the global heartache, health, and economic challenges of 2020 and 2021, but I for one will always remember them as very special years that showed the best of the Awty Community. Please enjoy this annual report as a testament to just some of the accomplishments of the year, with my heartfelt gratitude for your part in all that was good.

With warm regards,

Lisa A. H. Darling
